The John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders cheer team were big winners at an international cheerleading competition over the weekend.

The Crusaders won the Varsity Co-ed 4.2 division at the Sea to Sky Cheerleading Championships in Vancouver after a weekend of hard competition.

Team advisor Rena Fauchon-Smockum said the team felt a great sense of pride for winning the championship.

“It was awesome, it was a great feeling. Everyone was happy, tears of joy, they worked really hard to get to Vancouver. This is our fifth year and so that was the goal was to get to Vancouver one day and we did and we won, so it was awesome.”

The amount of effort not only getting to the championships, but winning was amazing to Fauchon-Smockum.

“I’m very proud of them, they worked hard, they practiced lots,” she said. “Lots of fundraising, they had to fundraise to get there. A lot of work went into getting there, so I’m very proud of them.”

Fauchon-Smockum added winning the Sea to Sky Championships is another piece of hardware in a successful year for the Crusaders cheer team. They have won every competition they’ve entered this year with another one coming up in Edmonton this weekend.
