Election 2016: SaskParty wins big in the Battlefords

Apr 5, 2016 | 5:34 AM

Claps and cheers roared as poll results came in at the SaskParty headquarters in the Battlefords.

Candidate Herb Cox won by a landslide doubling and sometimes tripling NDP votes in the polls.

Cox was surprised by how much they won by.

“I feel very fortunate and elated,” said Cox. “The people of the Battlefords have shown confidence in me again.”

After the win, Cox choked up a little bit during his speech, when he thanked everyone who worked with the party to help him win.

“There’s no words to express it,” is how Cox described his appreciation for his team especially the door knockers.

“Now we have to keep moving forward,” said Cox. “Attract business, attract people to move to the province. We’ve created 68,300 new jobs since we formed government in 2007. If you break that down it’s a job per hour.”

Cox said he would continue to be the voice of the Battlefords and will do whatever it takes to see the needs of the Battlefords met.

“I’m just going to go out, visit with and thank the people I haven’t thanked then it will be an early night. It’s back to work tomorrow,” said Cox of his celebration plans.

It was a lot mellower for the NDP and Rob Feist. He and his supporters weren’t upset by the final tally.

“I think the campaign was strong,” said Feist. “I’m very proud of the team. We wanted to bring this riding back to a democratic riding but at the same time I think we expressed a very positive vision to the riding and to the province.”

Feist feels that going forward, the NDP is in a strong position. He thinks the opposition will be strong and thinks it will be even stronger going into 2020.

The total votes were 4248 for Herb Cox of the SaskParty, 2233 for Rob Feist of the NDP, 82 for Josh Hunt of the Green Party and 434 for Dexter Gopher of the Liberal Party.
