UPDATE: Ahtahkakoop manhunt ends with suspect’s death

The suspect in the shooting death of a man on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has died in hospital,ending a day-long police manhunt which confined residents to their homes.

The suspect is being identified as Elgin Sasakamoose, the son of aboriginal hockey player Fred Sasakamoose.

Sources have told paNOW that he was involved in the Ahtahkakoop Creen Nation apparent murder suicide.

In a release distributed late Tuesday, RCMP said a 59-year-old man was found by officers on the reserve at around 5 p.m. The release suggests that the suspect shot himself in the presence of officers.

A gun was fired, and the man was transported to Shellbrook Hospital where he died. Police said none of their officers fired a shot.

The man is believed to be connected to the shooting death of a 56-year-old man near the community’s health centre just after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. In an earlier release, police said a man wearing camouflage was spotted riding away from the scene on an ATV, but they could not confirm if he was connected to the shooting.

No other suspects are being sought in this case. Residents of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation are being thanked for their cooperation.

RCMP will not be conducting any media interviews at this time, and an external investigation is underway.
