ELECTION 2016: NDP Leader champions multi-pronged crime prevention

Mar 16, 2016 | 7:03 AM

Provincial NDP leader Cam Broten championed a “multi-pronged” crime-prevention model during a stop in the city.

It’s not just about enforcement, Broten said, “it’s also very much about addressing the reasons someone turns to crime as opposed to living a law abiding life.”

Broten spoke to a small gathering at NDP The Battlefords candidate Rob Feist’s campaign office, on Tuesday evening March 15. He lent his support to an interdisciplinary look at crime-prevention in North Battleford.

“When supports are cut from any of the most vulnerable, I think of the funding to The Lighthouse for example, that has implications for other aspects of the community when it comes to ensuring that people have the supports that they need and the safety they need in general.”

Homelessness can affect crime severity Broten said, emphasizing his continued support for keeping the shelter open.

“It’s about working with the community-based organizations, working with these agencies that are working on the front lines in finding the best approach to provide stable funding so that they can do the work that they need,” he said.

Broten also spoke about the NDP’s plan to help reduce hospital wait-times by introducing nurse practitioners into emergency rooms to help deal with those not immediately requiring a physician.
