A temporary cold spell sweeps across northwest

Feb 29, 2016 | 11:26 AM

An end of the weekend cold snap hit the northwest hard but it won’t be staying long.

Much of the northwest saw -20’s and even lower wind chills as temperatures dropped off Sunday and overnight in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake areas.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Dan Kulak said wind chills have been near -40 C, but the temperature will be warming up.

“So that will moderate a bit today as the temperatures do sneak up a little bit. Looking at daytime highs of probably above minus 20 so certainly some recovery is in store.”

Along with the daytime temperatures, the extended forecast is also expected to warm up quite a bit.

“It is going to moderate really rapidly later on this week, so this is really a one day cold snap.” Kulak said. “Kind of unusual, but at the same time we’re also getting into March and so cold snaps do tend to last a little bit shorter when they come through.”

Kulak added March temperatures also look to be higher than usual, much like the mostly mild winter months this season.

“The most recent information we have was released last week indicating probably an above normal March temperature wise,” he said.

Battlefords resident Shelly Savoie was braving the cold as she got her groceries, but said it might be nice to have the frigid weather right now and not later as spring approaches.
