Curling tournament in full swing

Feb 25, 2016 | 6:52 AM

North Battleford is hosting the Senior Men’s and Women’s Provincial Curling Championships this week at the Northland Power Curling Centre. The Tournament started on Wednesday and runs till Sunday, when the finalists from the weeks round robin events will compete for the championship.

Organizers project the championship finals on Sunday will draw up to 300 people said Provincial Curling Championship Co-Chair Ed Iwanchuk.

“The number of titles won by the teams that are competing for the Seniors Title is at least 50 or so provincial titles,” said Iwanchuk. “You’re getting the best in the province right now and they have proved it over time.”

Daryl Williamson, skip for team Williamson out of Moosomin, is looking forward to competing.

“This is the first time in North Battleford for me,” he said. “It’s nice and keen, a little bit straighter than we have been playing on, but it’s good. It will just be a matter of catching onto it.”

Williamson is confident that his team will do well.

“If we pull our pants up, I think our prospects aren’t too bad actually,” he said. “You don’t come here to lose.”

Men’s and women’s teams compete in four alternating draws Thursday, Friday and Saturday, starting at 9:00 a.m.

Tickets are available for single days or for the entire event.
