Applications open for downtown storefront grants

Feb 24, 2016 | 4:38 PM

Downtown businesses in North Battleford have the chance to spruce up their storefronts through grants from the business improvement district.

The Downtown North Battleford organization is taking applications for the 2016 Facade Improvement Program. The city has set aside $10,000 and will foot half the bill for renovations.

“Sometimes people are just looking at doing some painting or some minor changes so then as long as we can make sure that we’re giving out that full $10,000, that’s definitely our ultimate goal. We definitely want to see lots of business investing into their properties and taking advantage of the grant,” executive director Lisa Kissick said.

They have seen success in the first two years of the program.

“We have given away the maximum amount our board has approved in the budget every year,” Kissick said.

“We had a number of applications both in 2014 and 2015 so we’ve had I think now eight different businesses that have totally redone the outside of their buildings.”

Kissick added she has seen the grants provide a big boost for businesses.

“Any financial assistance that we can offer is to the benefit of the business owner so people definitely appreciate the help. Sometimes it just pushes them to be able to get those renovations done that maybe they couldn’t have afforded for another year or two because they were budgeting for it.”

Application submissions can be made through the Downtown North Battleford website
