Skittles returns from New York a “Winner’s” Dog

Feb 22, 2016 | 11:51 AM

Skittles the golden retriever and his owner Robyn McGonigle returned from the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show with some hardware, and McGonigle couldn’t be more proud of her pup.

“He did awesome. He came home with winner’s dog, which means he took the points for class males. There were three males in his class and one in another class,” she said.

Skittles’ class was “bred by class” and he was able to beat out the competition and advance to the next stage said McGonigle.

“Taking winner’s dog gets him into the best of breed competition and the best of breed lineup.”

Skittles was unable to take anything in that competition but did very well for his first time, considering the dogs he was up against.

Even though they weren’t able to make it any further, McGonigle just loved the ride with Skittles.

“It was an amazing experience. It was fun, very busy and lots of crowds and spectators,” she said.

Three thousand dogs competed in the show this year, fifty of which were golden retrievers. It is the biggest stage for this type of competition McGonigle explained.

“This is considered the most prestigious, it’s like the Super Bowl of dog shows.”

McGonigle hopes her and Skittles will go back next year, but they still have work to do here in Canada.

“He’s got some shows coming up next month. One in Prince Albert and a couple in BC,” she said.
