Regina court to hear sentencing submissions for Goforths

Feb 12, 2016 | 8:42 AM

The Goforths will learn more Friday, Feb. 12, about how long they will stay in prison.

Tammy and Kevin Goforth were convicted Saturday of the murder of a four-year-old and the unlawful bodily harm of a two-year-old in their care.

Tammy was convicted of second-degree murder which carries a life sentence. What needs to be decided is her parole eligibility, which ranges from 10 to 25 years.

There is no minimum sentence for manslaughter, which Kevin was convicted of. Sentences can run from two to 15 years.

Any sentence in relation to the bodily harm conviction will run concurrently.

Sentencing arguments will be made by their lawyers, although likely the fact they had no previous convictions and no issue with the law prior to this will work in their favour.

Court will also hear victim impact statements from the family of the two girls.

The two were placed with the Goforths in November 2011 and ended up in hospital malnourished, dehydrated and covered in bruises in August 2012.

Justice Ellen Gunn is expected to render her sentencing decision at a later date.
