Riders score big for women with cancer

Feb 11, 2016 | 4:35 PM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders want to make some dreams come true for women who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The Cameco Touchdown for Dreams is a partnership formed between The Saskatchewan Roughriders, Cameco and the Saskatchewan Cancer agency. These three groups come together every year to grant seven to ten women with life-threatening cancer one wish.

Christina Bieber was one of these dream recipients in 2015 chosen out of a record number 45 applicants. She is currently on a tour of the province speaking of her experiences and encouraging.

On Thursday, she made a stop in Prince Albert at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

Bieber was 18 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with cancer. Her dream was to visit Disneyland with her family.

“I just wanted to see happy smiles on their faces. I’m a mom and that’s what moms do,” Bieber said.

“When I called and (Jonathan Huntington) was like ‘we want to grant your dream,’ I was like ‘what!’ and started crying and I don’t remember getting any words in after that…I cried instantly.”

Bieber said she cried tears of joy watching her kids ride the carousel at Disneyland. She said called the experience “surreal.”

“We play a small role,” director and corporate relations with Cameco, Jonathan Huntington said.

“Rider nation plays the biggest role in contributing funds to this. Every October there is one game, it’s a pink game, where we sell pink souvenirs and they’re special ones only available for one game… All the profit goes to helping make the dreams come true.”

Huntington said it’s really the “Rider Nation” which makes the program possible. He said there is nothing else like it in the Canadian Football League which is a testament to the club and its fans.

Cameco Touchdown for Dreams has operated since 2012 and has granted 26 dreams.
