The mayor of Wilkie said he’s disappointed the Royal Bank plans to close its branch in the community southwest of the Battlefords.

“I do feel for the clients themselves that are involved with dealing with that institution,” David Ziegler said. He learned last summer the bank was considering closing the branch first opened in 1908.

“I don’t feel good as mayor, because the Royal Bank has been in the community as long as the community’s been here,” he said.

RBC said it made the decision to close the Wilkie and Cut Knife branches because of the limited services it could offer compared with the branch in North Battleford and what was available on-line.

Wilkie also has branches of Innovation Credit Union and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

“It just makes it increasingly difficult for communities to keep going,” Ziegler said. “One by one, they disappear from the face of the community map.”

RBC said the Wilkie branch is slated to close July 22, with in Cut Knife following on Aug. 12.
