Support and tributes continue as La Loche grieves

Feb 1, 2016 | 7:23 AM

More than a week after the shootings in La Loche that left four people dead and seven hurt, many people’s thoughts are still with the northern Saskatchewan community.

Tributes are still circulating on social media, including a video from a few youth groups in Prince Albert.

The “Voices of the North” and the “Northern Spirits” youth groups joined together for a performance of Lean On Me as a tribute to people in La Loche.

The Facebook video was posted Thursday night had been shared 2,000 times by Monday morning.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited La Loche Friday, assuring the community that the federal government will be offering support for years to come.

“The federal government will be there not just now through the difficult time, but in the weeks, months and indeed the years to come as we look to grieve, to heal and to … thrive,” Trudeau said. However, the prime minister stopped short of committing to specific funding requested by La Loche’s acting mayor.

Two teenage brothers were killed in a home and a teacher and an aide were killed at the high school in the Dene community on Jan. 22. Seven people were wounded.

A 17-year-old boy, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. Friends have said he was an outcast at home and a victim of bullying at school.

On the weekend, victim Marie Janvier was laid to rest. People alsogathered at a vigil in Saskatoon in her honour.

La Loche and all who need it. So blessed for all that showed up for prayers and song. Not knowing how else to support… Lean on us! This is for you ❤️❤️❤️ from us. #prayforlaloche
